Era in corso l'anno 1945 quando l'Amministrazione
dell'Arciconfraternita della Morte, sentė la necessità
di rifare alcune statue perché quelle esistenti non
erano armoniche fra loro. Per far sė che tutte le statue
avessero la medesima fattura, l'incarico venne affidato
a Giulio Cozzoli che già aveva plasmato il Cristo
Morto, la Veronica, S. Giovanni e Maria Cleofe. Lo scultore
considerò l'azione dell'apostolo non disgiunta da
quella del gallo; immaginò, quindi, S. Pietro sorpreso
dal canto del gallo, timoroso e sbigottito per aver rinnegato
il Maestro. Sia pure rispettando gli stessi colori della
precedente, realizzò la statua in un atteggiamento
diverso, con la mano sinistra portata verso l'orecchio,
anziché alla fronte, con la barba incolta, che incominciava
a diventar canuta, e con il piede posato su un gradino del
pretorio del procuratore romano Pilato. Anche il bel gallo,
che si ammira accanto all'apostolo, richiese uno studio
ben attento, tanto da necessitare di ben due esemplari come
modelli: uno per la sua fattezza fisica e l'altro per la
meravigliosa colorazione variopinta del suo piumaggio.
Nel 1948 l'immagine venne portata in processione, ma la
popolazione non l'accettò benevolmente, anzi la critica
in merito, fatte salve le eccezioni, fu molto severa.
Il tempo, ovvero il miglior giudice, ha fatto giustizia!

It was the year 1945 when
the Administration of the Archonfraternity of the Death, felt
the necessity to rebuild some statues because those existing
were not harmonic among them. In order to make that all the
statues had the same cut, the assignment was entrusted to
Giulio Cozzoli that had already moulded Dead Christ, Veronica,
St. John and Mary Cleofe. The sculptor, considered the action
of the apostle not separated from the one of the rooster;
he imagined, therefore, St. Peter surprised at the song of
the rooster, afraid and bewildered to have repudiated the
Master. Though respecting the same colors of the previous
one, he realized the statue in a different attitude, with
the left hand towards his ear, rather than to his forehead,
with the uncultivated beard, that was beginning to become
white-haired, and with his foot put down on a step of prethoriurn
of Roman proxy Pilato. Also the nice rooster, than we can
admire next to the apostle, demanded a very careful study,
so as to need two exemplaries like models: one for the physical
feature and the other for the wonderful colors of the plumage.
In 1948 the image was carried in procession, but the people
did not accept it willingly, indeed the critics, except a
few, were very strict.
The time, that is the best judge, has made justice!
