Dopo lunghe vicissitudini, la nuova immagine
del discepolo prediletto, venne ultimata nella seconda quindicina
di marzo del 1927 e fu solennemente benedetta, con la relativa
funzione, la Domenica delle Palme. L'artista volle raffigurare
S. Giovanni, l'evangelista, il giovane buono, mentre mira
con intimo strazio l'amato Maestro sospeso al patibolo della
Croce. Il Sabato Santo dello stesso anno, la statua fu portata
in processione. La popolazione non risparmiò alcun
commento in merito; alcuni sostenevano il pregio artistico
della vecchia statua, altri, ritenendo che la figura era
troppo snella, rimpiangevano la statua precedente di forme
barocche, pesanti. Col tempo le critiche svanirono; pian
piano, i molfettesi si affezionarono al nuovo S. Giovanni.

After long vicissitudes,
the new image of the dearest disciple, was completed in the
second half of March 1927 and it was solemnly blessed, with
the relative function, on Sunday of the Palms. The artist
wanted to represent St. John, the evangelist, the good young
person, while he aims with intimate pain the loved Master
suspended at the scaffold of the Cross. On Saint Saturday
of the same year, the statue was carried in procession. The
people did not save any comment about it; some supported the
artistic esteem of the old statue, others, thinking that figure
was too slender, regretted the previous statue having baroque,
heavy shapes. After some time the critics vanished; slowly,
the people from Molfetta became affectioned to new St. John.
