Commissionata allo scultore dall'Amministrazione
del Pio Sodalizio della Morte, la Veronica segna l'inizio
del rinnovamento delle sacre immagini portate in processione
dall'Arciconfraternita della Morte. II Sabato Santo del
1907, la figura dall'ameno volto orientale e dai grandi
occhi dubbiosi varcò la soglia del Purgatorio. È
stata la prima statua del Cozzoli, allora ventiquattrenne,
ad uscire in processione; un'opera che permise ai molfettesi
di apprezzare il talento e la valenza artistica del giovane
Cozzoli. L'atteggiamento della figura, l'espressione del
volto emozionato e sorpreso in seguito al fatto soprannaturale,
gli occhi che sembrano mirare la moltitudine, la folla,
per indicare loro l'avvenuto miracolo. II corpo discostato
dal Sudario, muto testimone di uno straordinario avvenimento,
pare mostrare un riverente timore di avvicinarsi ad esso.

Commissioned to the sculptor by the Administration
of the Devout Society of the Death, Veronica marks the beginning
of the renewal of the sacred images carried in procession
from the Archconfraternity of the Death. On Saint Saturday
of 1907, the figure with the pleasant oriental face and
with big doubtful eyes crossed the threshold of Purgatorio's
church. It was the first statue by 24-year-old Cozzoli,
to go in procession; a work that allowed people from Molfetta
to appreciate the talent and the artistic valence of young
Cozzoli. The attitude of the figure, the expression of the
face that is moved and surprised by the soprannatural fact,
the eyes that seem to aim the multitude, the crowd, in order
to indicate them the happened miracle. The body far from
the Shroud, dumb witness of an extraordinary event, seems
to show a reverent fear to approach himself to it.
