Era trascorso appena un lustro dall'inizio
del XX secolo quando Giulio Cozzoli, tornò nella "sua"
Molfetta.
Allora ventitreenne, dopo aver vissuto per un decennio a fianco
del suo Maestro Filippo Cifariello per affinare le tecniche
scultoree, decise di tornare nella città che gli dette
i natali. L'artista era molto affezionato alle nostre tradizioni
pasquali, specie alle mistiche processioni, che costituiscono
i momenti pių sentiti ed attesi dalla popolazione. Subito
dopo la Pasqua del 1906, decise di esternare tutto quest'amore
per i "momenti" pasquali e di tradurlo nella sua arte. Spinto
da avveduto impulso, iniziò a concretare un desiderio
che lo impegnò per un cinquantennio: realizzare le
statue portate in processione dall'Arciconfraternita della
Morte. Ebbe, cosė inizio un lungo periodo di tempo durante
il quale, Giulio Cozzoli plasmò le statue, tanto care
ai molfettesi, che tuttora ammiriamo nelle processioni del
Venerdė di Passione e del Sabato Santo.
Le statue dell'Arciconfraternita della Morte sono state realizzate
in cartapesta, adottando un accurato procedimento volto a
impedire l'insidia delle tarme, che la cartapesta procura;
fa eccezione, il bel viso della Madonna nel gruppo della "Pietà",
di pregevole fattura, che fu solo ritoccato dal Cozzoli. Tutte
le operazioni venivano compiute con meticolosa accuratezza,
che gli era congeniale, prestando quindi molta attenzione
alla fattura delle immagini, mettendo in tal modo al servizio
del popolo la sua arte, che oggigiorno decora le processioni
organizzate dall'Arciconfraternita della Morte.

It had just passed a lustre from the beginning
of XXth century when Giulio Cozzoli, returned to "his" Molfetta.
Then he was 23 years old, and after living for a decade with
his Master Filippo Cifariello to improve the sculptural techniques,
returned to the town where he was born. The artist was very
attached to our Easter traditions, especially to the mystical
processions that represent the most felt and expected by people.
Soon after Easter of 1906, he decided to show all this love
for the "Easter moments" and to represent it in his art. Pushed
by noticed impulse, he began to realize a desire that engaged
him for a period of fifty years: to build the statues carried
in procession by the Archconfratemity of the Death. It started,
therefore a long period of time during which, Giulio Cozzoli
moulded the statues, so much loved by the people from Molfetta,
and that still today we admire in the processions of Friday
of Passion and of Saint Saturday.
The statues of the Archconfraternity of the Death have been
built in papier maché, adopting an accurate procedure
to prevent the danger of the moths, that the papier maché
causes; with the exception of the beautiful face of Our Lady
in the group of the "Pietà", well made and only touched
up by Cozzoli. All work was carried out with meticulous accuracy
and he paid attention to the making-up of the images, putting
in such a way to the service of the people his art, the one
that today decorates the processions organized by the Archconfraternity
of the Death.
